20-40 mesh forsterite is an important refractory raw material, its main components include magnesium oxide (MgO) and silicon dioxide (SiO2), the theoretical chemical formula is 2MgO · SiO2 or Mg2SiO4. This mineral crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and usually presents short columnar particles or thick plate-like and round particles. Its Mohs hardness is 6.5\~ 7.0, density is 3.22\~ 3.33 g/cm ^ 3, and melting point is as high as 1890 ℃. From room temperature to the melting point, the crystal form of forsterite is stable, and there is no crystal change.
The color of forsterite is mostly colorless, white, light yellow or light green. It is one of the minerals that are more resistant to high temperature in magnesia refractories. In its crystal structure, Mg ions can be replaced by Fe ions, so in nature, forsterite often contains 0\~ 10% fayalite. However, the melting point of fayalite is low (1205 ℃), and the presence of Al2O3 and CaO may also form low melting point minerals, thus affecting the high temperature performance of forsterite. Therefore, high quality forsterite requires MgO content greater than 50%,Fe2O3, Al2O3 and CaO content of less than 6%, 2% and 1.5, respectively.
In the field of application, 20-40 mesh forsterite is widely used in metallurgy, thermal and foundry industries due to its excellent fire resistance. It can be used to manufacture high-temperature equipment components such as regenerator lattice bricks, furnace bottoms, hot blast furnace linings, etc., and can also be used as casting molding materials and continuous casting tundish lining materials.
